Down on BDock A DeweyRehoboth Novel Paul Dyer 9780615816494 Books

Paul Dyer has turned in a superior first novel that makes for an engaging and fun read. Call it a beach book if you wish or an action/thriller if you must—it’s both. More correctly, it’s an excellent beach novel that at a certain point plummets headlong into stealth and dark waters. It’s a character-driven story that’s got romance and adventure along with a throng of wonderful and fully-realized characters. Good, fun people to know, except for the small number with character defects as deep as the Mariana Trench.

The setting is summertime at two lesser-known beach haunts: fun-loving Dewey Beach, thronged by collegians and beer-lovers of all stripes; and family-oriented, a mite upper-scale Rehoboth Beach. Hence (for those unfamiliar with these two Delaware beach towns), the book’s subtitle: A Dewey-Rehoboth Novel.

A certain gracefulness permeates the writing. It’s also writing that moves the story right along. While it’s primarily a story of relationships (lovers, best friends, and friendship in general), there’s elegance in all phases of storytelling, whether it involves the nature of the characters or the character of nature, e.g., (speaking about 35-year old bartender Joe Rath):

“He loved the ocean, especially during the solitude of the offseason when the sanderlings retook possession of the beach with their maniacal dashes towards and away from the surf line, taking flight in synchronized, ever-changing patterns.

“But he thought of the ocean as an autistic child with its endless repetition, in and out, and after a run he’d sit, mesmerized, locked into the rhythm of the waves, and an hour would pass mindlessly. That’s why he preferred the bay, the hyperactive child. Constant activity. The barn swallows that lived under the dock dive-bombing people as they walked over their nests. Gulls jockeying for position on the pilings. Boats of every type entering and leaving the bay …”

But every friendship has unknowns, and unknowns can lead to unexpected consequences.

Down on BDock A DeweyRehoboth Novel Paul Dyer 9780615816494 Books Reviews

As a Rehoboth resident I have to admit I bought this book hoping to find references to folks I knew. There was a bit of that, but what really surprised me was how much more there was here to enjoy. It is well crafted with excellent character development and an intriguing and exciting story! Glimpses of the "dock lifestyle" will make anyone who has not experienced that envious. The love shared by the characters makes you really care about what happens to them while facing exciting challenges. A great book that I would strongly recommend. I WANT ANOTHER ONE PLEASE!
I did not need to read many pages of Paul Dyer's Down on B-Dock before the familiar echo of John D. MacDonald began to sound in my head. I suspect not a few of his fans will leave this book with the hope that it is the beginning of a series. The late Travis McGee's key ingredient was sprezzatura, the ability to make his excellence seem effortless even though the books are full of evidence that he works hard to achieve it and to make his environment work for him. Paul Dyer's characters definitely meet the test of the "busy hippie." They are people who have not just dropped out of one life but also have dropped actively into another life, a life the reader finds attractive. Dyer structures the book so that there are two halves, equally engaging. The first half develops the characters; the second half shows them in motion. I'd definitely read a sequel or two or three.
You will quickly get caught up in the characters of this novel, they almost feel like people you know or would like to know. Multi faceted storyline, which was a pleasant surprise. A truly excellent Summer read - or Winter, but it'll get you thinking about Summer.
The order was processed quickly and arrived sooner than expected. Bought it cause we live near Dewey and was interested in local tale, and the first half of the book was great in that regard. The second half of the book is a Clancy-like spy story that was not bad but was disjointed from the first half.
