I received this book today and I read it in about 4 and a half hours (I never put it down) and loved every second of it. Now for the real review-Brista's debut deserves nothing short of high marks. While it bends the rules a bit (in a great way) you can feel the life and blood of the main character. As well as the other characters. I will not spoil an inch of this heart felt and amazingly emotional journey that is Remedy For Memory, for that would only risk ruining your own experience. Go into this knowing you're going on the Magnum XL-200 roller coaster of emotion. It will make you smile, laugh and even tear up. It is difficult to fully express the realism and authenticity I felt reading the dialogue and various descriptions of certain scenes, and of the plot in general. I was sucked in and felt like I was in good ol' Spanish 1 and at a certain friends house. It was just beautiful. It also definitely speaks to the younger soul. But could still please anyone looking for a story of life and love through the eyes of modern youth. I loved some of the openness to it (which is explained by a short yet delightful Q&A with Brista herself at then end) and it truly felt like I was looking, no, living along side this teenager as she stumbles and sometimes struts proudly through her young life. There is so much in the 218 pages of story here. I absolutely adored the illustrations that were also included, done by Miss Brista herself! It is a wonderful piece of work and I am so pleased with my purchase. I will admit, it is not for everyone. But if you like what you read above, then give this book a shot. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and will most likely reread it a year or two from now. I am deeply looking forward to what Brista Drake comes up with next.

This book was definitely a page turner. The focus was around a developing relationship between two students in high school. It was a romantic and enticing story. I couldn't help but root for Aaron and Trisha through the whole thing!
I'm going to be honest here...this book surprised me. It really was like going to a high school and observing one student and her interactions with her peers; it felt that realistic to me. Yes, there were some typos--mostly revolving around homonyms (your/you're, cord/chord, passed/past)--but I see those in most books so that doesn't actually affect my rating. No, really, the four star rating comes from the book being really good, but not fantastic. It's a first novel, and it's a good one. I look forward to seeing how Brista grows and develops as her writing career continues.
As someone who lives around the same area as where this story takes place, I loved all the little setting details that made the story feel more real...as well as making me think back on some of my own trips to Cedar Point, The Palace Theater, and even my time in the State Fair Band. It was a great nostalgia fest for me as I near my 27th birthday. Many of the character relationships within the book are so similar to the friendships and relationships I had in high school, so I think that realism will help the book resonate with current high school students and will allow those of us who have been out of school for a few years to think fondly (or not-so-fondly) on our high school times. Brista impresses with her first book and I'm looking forward to reading more by Brista Drake in the future.
I would recommend this book to my friends. Even for a fantasy obsessed reader like me, it's nice to occasionally stray into other genres. This is a great YA coming-of-age book.
An interesting story that came alive off the page. The high school setting was vivid and brought me back to that time in my own life. I believe the story is best going in without knowing too much as how it reveals itself is really engaging.
The characters were a standout, refreshing and the relationships felt alive and fluid. They were complex and a lot more dynamic than what you see in most YA fiction.
This isn't a typical romance but it is very believable and fraught with emotion and a solid first novel from Brista Drake.
Brista Drake has created a unique YA novel that leans toward literary fiction with its focus on slowly revealing, rather than evolving her characters, and the story's strong focus on these characters with the plot serving as a backdrop. The character of Aaron was a pleasant surprise, as he is what you might expect the quirky friend of the love interest to be like, rather than the love interest himself. I like how at first, I assumed him to be an unimportant side character, and then he turned out to be much more than that. He has a lot of charm, and if it wasn't for the fact that Trisha liked him, I might not have liked her as much, actually. But the fact that she sees the potential in a person such as him, makes her more sympathetic.
There's a good amount of realism to how Brista portrays her characters, dialogue, and even storyevents. The drama largely lies within a highly emotional young woman, rather than external events, which might turn some people off this story. I'm a little torn, as at times, the plot events get a little too mundane for me, and I feel like I'm reading an autobiography rather than a novel. And sometimes we get so deep into Trisha's head, that I loose my grip on what exactly is going on. For these reasons I cannot give this five stars, but then I suppose it's largely a matter of taste. I like how the story focuses on Aaron and Trisha, and though the side characters get a little anonymous, it's okay, as I'm mostly interested in the dynamic between these two anyway.
In short Good book. Looking forward to the next one.
